Football, cheerleading signups start: The Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority is registering for Unified Football & Cheerleading. Football is open to ages 7-12 and cheerleading is open to ages 6-12.  The age control date is Sept. 1, 2009. Register through Aug. 6 online at rfpra.com or in-person at 300 W. Third St. Registration is $50.  Football weigh-in is mandatory and is scheduled for  Thursday, Aug. 20. For more: Rick Haase at 706-291-0766. Unified Football and cheerleading is conducted in partnership with Boys and Girls Club of Northwest Georgia and Parks and Recreation Authority.

Storyhour, Toddler Time at Rome-Floyd County Library: >Toddler Time is for children ages 18 months through 4 years old and is packed with fingerplays, songs, stories, puppetry and more. Toddler Time productions are held in the Children’s Theatre of the library.

>Storyhour, performed in the Coosa Room, is for children ages 5 years and up, and involves live drama, audience interaction and puppetry.

Special guests include storytellers, magicians, karate instructors, musicians, and more. The free programs are performed on Tuesday or Thursday mornings and will continue through Thursday, July 9th.

Children attending any programs or workshops may count the performances as reading time on their timesheets. For more information about the reading program (which continues until July 17), contact the Children’s Department at 706-236-4608.

'Be Creative at Your Library' theme of summer reading program: The Rome-Floyd County Library is preparing another summer of reading and adventure for area kids. This year's program is called "Be Creative at Your Library" is under way. The goal: To encourage kids to visit the library and spend part of their summer reading. In 2008, some 5,000 kids read a combined 50,000 hours. Young rewards are rewarded for reading specified blocks of time.

>“Express Yourself @ the Library,” a program for sixth grade through 12th grade students, also is under way. This program includes an Internet hunt, a reference hunt, a chocolate workshop, scrapbooking ideas and a “design a hemp bracelet” class. Goodies are awarded to participants who read.

Join us as we celebrate the sixth anniversary of the opening of the Booth Museum. Children can participate in art activities offered throughout the building, and families can enjoy continuous entertainment in the Booth Theatre.

Sept. 12: 10 a.m.– Noon: Colors of the Canyon

Spend time in the Special Exhibition Gallery and learn how artists over the years have photographed and painted the beautiful colors of the Grand Canyon. Using the primary and secondary colors create your own dramatic view of the Grand Canyon to take home.

Summer is just around the corner and if you’re like a lot of others, you might be thinking about putting off the family vacation and opting to stay home to save money. Even if you’ve canceled the vacation, you can still provide your kids with something less expensive and fun to do this summer… go to camp!

There are endless camp opportunities available for kids of all ages. Take your pick from day camps to overnight trips, from sports to music to outdoor adventures. The choices are numerous--and affordable.


Rome YMCA
Rome YMCA The YMCA offers two options for kids. Kinder Camp is for ages 3-5 and is designed for the younger child and includes daily swim lessons, arts & crafts and supervised play time and field trips. Day Camp is for ages 6-12 and provides a full day of fun at YMCA Camp Bryant. Camp includes archery range, playing fields and nature trials, as well as tennis lessons and swimming. Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Association

Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority Parks and Rec offers day camps at a number of locations in the county, along with an outdoor camp and a teen adventure camp. Day camps are available at the Anthony Center in West Rome, the Fielder Center in South Rome, Gilbreath Center in Lindale and one in Shannon (place to be determined). Features a new theme each week includes activities such as arts & crafts, nature, games, dance, movies, music, outside play and 3 weekly field trips. For ages 6-12.

Summer Camp Fielder, South Rome
Weekly themes will provide an emphasis for activities such as arts & crafts, physical fitness, movies and guest speakers, along with trips to Northside Swim Center. For ages 6-12.

Summer Camp Gilbreath, Lindale
Features a new theme each week includes activities such as arts & crafts, games, dance, movies and 2 weekly field trips. For ages 6-12.

Darlington School

Darlington offers a combination of traditional day camps and specialty sports camps, including some overnight camps. Day camps include those focused on sports, arts, academics and adventure fun. According to Anne Paige Wilson, Darlington’s Director of Marketing, the various sports camps are for serious athletes who want to work on honing their skills over the summer. Delightascope
Camp Delightascope is a half-day summer camp experience designed for younger children ages 2-7. Activities include art, crafts, math & science, book making, music, games, story time and snack time.
Dates:

Place: Darlington School- Lower Campus
Cost: $125 per session (snacks included)

 

Cheerleading Camp
Campers will learn lots of new cheers, perform age-appropriate stunts, improve technique and build repertoire of moves and formations. Each day of camp will feature a unique outfit theme with a pep rally to conclude the week. Offered in three levels- Youth for grades K-2, Junior for grades 3-5 and Senior for grades 6-8.

Lacrosse Camps

GameBreaker Lacrosse Camps for Boys will be leading the camp. To learn more visit www.laxcamps.com. This is an overnight camp with an extended day option for boys ages 8-18.

Cost: $495-$575 for overnight or $395-$475 for extended day


Soccer Camps

Shorter College

Shorter College offers a number of sports camps for boys and girls as well as the Summer Arts Institute that focuses on keyboard studies, voice and musical theatre.

Football Camp
Shorter offers a football summer camp led by Shorter’s Offensive Line Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Tim Mathis. Camp details are not available at this time, but will be posted online at www.GoShorterHawks.com or you can call 706-233-7522.

Berry College
Berry hosts a number of sports camps through the Athletic Department. Camps available include baseball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, tennis, equestrian, and volleyball. Dates and times are still being finalized for these camps, but will be available online soon at www.berry.edu/athletics click on Berry Sports Camps link.


WinShape Camps

WinShape Foundation offers both traditional and adventure overnight camps for boys and girls in grades 2-12. The Grand Theatre

Senior High Camp
Camp is for students presently in grades 7-12. Campers will learn acting, singing, dancing, technical work, costuming, makeup and team-building, while working on play “Brigadoon”.

THEMED GARDEN WALKS

CLASS 2: Saturday, Aug. 8 (rain date: Saturday, Aug. 29)
Times: 10 a.m. to noon
Cost: $8 per person
Location: Meet in front of The Martha Berry Museum
For ages 10 and up
Explore the woodlands. Learn to recognize native and invasive plant species and how to encourage or control them. Be sure to wear walking shows. Insect repellent and water are recommended.
Instructors: Kristin McNully and Heather Miller, horticulturists for Oak Hill.

BUILD A BIRDHOUSE
Date: Saturday, July 25
Times: 10 a.m. to noon
Cost: $20 per child
Location: Picnic area behind the Oak Hill Museum Store (rain location: Oak Hill Garden Room)
For ages 7-11
Build a birdhouse that is appealing to many birds including chickadees, finches, wrens, swallows and nuthatches. Birdhouse will be yours at the end of the workshop to take home. Ice cream break included. All necessary supplies provided.
Instructor: Rebecca Henry, museum assistant at Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum.
