GNTC hires Early Childhood Education Program instructor; open house Aug. 4: (Media release) On July 1, Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s Polk County Campus added a full-time instructor to the Early Childhood Education program. This allows for both day and evening classes, making it convenient for busy students in Rome, Cedartown, and Rockmart.

Dr. Craig McDaniel, president of GNTC, named Karon Futch as the full time Early Childhood Education instructor for the Polk County Campus. Futch brings over three years of teaching experience and a wealth of academic excellence to the program.  She holds a bachelor of early childhood education from the University of West Georgia, a master of science in education from Walden University, and is currently pursuing a doctor of education from Liberty University.

Futch (right, with a student) and GNTC would like to invite all that are interested in the program to an open house on Aug. 4. It will be held on the Polk County Campus from 5:30-7 p.m. to kick off the fall quarter enrollment.

The program currently has over 400 students between the GNTC Polk, Gordon, and Walker County Campuses. Students may select from traditional campus, online, or hybrid classes to complete their educational goals. Early Childhood Education students may pursue the Technical Certificate of Credit (TCC), diploma in Early Childhood Education, or continue through the associate degree level. All courses offered meet or exceed existing and new state requirements for early childhood caregivers.

With numerous financial aid opportunities available, such as the “Bright from the Start Scholarship,” a quality education has never been more accessible.

In addition, Georgia Northwestern Technical College has reached an articulation agreement with Reinhardt University’s Early Childhood Education program. This agreement allows GNTC associate level graduates to transfer into the Reinhardt bachelor degree program.

GNTC has 24 former students enrolled at Reinhardt and three former students that have graduated from the bachelor degree program.

“I feel that Georgia Northwestern Technical College did an excellent job preparing me for the continuation of my education in early childhood,” stated Johnna Lindsey, 2009 GNTC graduate. Lindsey is 23 years old and plans to graduate with a bachelor degree in Early Childhood Education in 2012.  She would like to teach either kindergarten or special education.

My current book recommendation for Middle & High School readers is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins  http://www.suzannecollinsbooks.com

I just finished the first book and will read Catching Fire this weekend. Mockingjay, the third book in this series, is to be released August 24th. A motion picture is in the works!

"The Hunger Games is as close to perfect an adventure novel as I've ever read. I could not put it down. Collins has transformed the ancient Labyrinth myth into a terrifyingly believable tale of future America. Readers will be hungry for more. --Rick Riordan, author of The Percy Jackson Series and The 39 Clues

Exchange Club Sponsors Annual Fair in Cedartown, Georgia

Trey Kelley, President of the Cedartown Exchange Club, and Dan Riley, 2010 Fair Board President have announced that the Annual Polk County Fair will be held this year at the Cedartown Fairgrounds near the Georgia State Patrol Office on highway 278 from Tuesday, August 3rd through Saturday, August 7th.  This is an earlier date than in years past, so mark your calendars.  The very popular Dixieland Carnival will be back again this year with their fun rides and midway and the Animal Farm is back for the school children.  Livestock judging will award prizes in several classes for Hogs, Cattle and Lambs.  School art contest winners will be displayed along with entries in arts and crafts, clothing, canning, cooking and much more. Come One!   Come All!  There will be plenty of rides, food and entertainment providing good, old fashioned, wholesome fun for the whole family.  Fair hours Tuesday through Thursday will be from 5 pm until 10:30 pm and, on Friday and Saturday from 5 pm until 11 pm.  Parking is free.  Admission price is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children, and children under 5 are free.  For more information about this year’s Fair, call 770-748-1309 after August 1.

Student Day will be on Tuesday with free admission for all students at elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and colleges.

In addition to having a great time with your family at the Fair, the dollars you spend will go back into the community to do a lot of good for others.  The Fair is the major fund raising activity of the Exchange Club whose primary emphasis is prevention of child abuse and support of youth.

Money raised by the fair help Exchangites fund their support of Foster Parents Association, “Our House” Battered Women’s shelter and child fingerprinting and allows the club to provide deserving students thousands of dollars in scholarships and Youth of the Month recognition during the year.  The Exchange Club supports the 4-H Club, Boy Scouts and Explorers.

The Fair also allows the club to dedicate Freedom Shrines in government buildings and schools, sponsor “One Nation Under God” Prayer Breakfasts, and sponsor the “Give a Kid a Flag to Wave” program.  The Exchange Club honors a Law Officer of the Year, and two Firefighters of the Year and funds School District Special Needs.  They also provide Fire Prevention Materials for school children and sponsor Crime Prevention Awareness Week.

So come on out and do your part for the Community while having a great time with the family!  Come to the Polk County Fair August 3rd through the 7th.  You’ll be glad you did!
