2006 Tour de Georgia
TOUR DE GEORGIA RETURNS TO ROME IN '06: Rome will be home to yet another stage of the Tour de Georgia next April.
The route for the fourth edition of what is now called North America's premiere cycling event was announced Tuesday.
Cyclists will cruise into Rome on Wednesday, April 19, after departing from Fayetteville earlier in the day.
Rome will not be home to the tour's time trial as it has been for the past two years. The time trial will now be staged beginning in Walker County and winding up in downtown Chattanooga. The previous venue was around Mount Alto.
This will mark Rome's fourth time hosting at least one stage of the tour. Rome was the finish site for one leg of the trek in the inaugural tour in 2003. In both 2004 and 2005, Rome had both a finishing stage and the time trial around Mount Alto.
The 2004 race was perhaps Rome's brightest day in the tour spotlight. Tour de France champ Lance Armstrong won both Rome stages and went on to win the overall race.
We'll post news shortly on how you can volunteer to help with the Rome stage.
