First Friday with Georgia Blues Brothers; John Lee Hookers at 333; Backswing at Moon Roof; Scratch Off John at Broad St.

mmWe sure hate to see the First Friday Concert Series come to a close but its sure great to see the Georgia Blues Brothers performing beginning at 7 p.m. If you haven’t seen these guys, it’s a must. Definitely bring everybody in the family, street, and neighborhood. These guys are hoot!

333 on Broad will be hopping and rocking to the blues drenched rock and roll of the John Lee Hookers this Friday evening. If you liked the First Friday concert but aren’t quite ready to go home, I recommend checking these guys out. Clay Broome fronts the band and puts on a great show every time.

You’ll also have the opportunity to check out some great music and enjoy the cool weather at the Moon Roof Bar as they will host Backswing.

Local classic and psychedelic rockers Scratch Off John will return to the scene to light up the stage at Broad Street Station. These guys can really rip out some great classics from artists like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. If you like classic rock these guys will deliver.

This is the final week of Rome Little Theatre’s performance of Peter Pan so you’ll definitely want to take the family to see this classic. The show runs Friday and Saturday evening with a matinee performance on Sunday.

Saturday: Running Water Powwow returns to Ridge Ferry Park;

Andrew Pope at 333 on Broad; Shawn Ash, CJ Solar at DJ's Tavern

Another great family event will take place at Ridge Ferry Park on Saturday and Sunday. The Running Water Powwow Cherokee Homecoming and Ripe Corn Festival is put on annually by the Native American Preservation Association of Georgia. It’s an excellent cultural event featuring authentic Native American food, arts and crafts, dancing, and regalia and a great way to spend an afternoon in this great weather we’ve been having.

Andrew Pope grew up in Geraldine, Ala., to a family of musicians and has been keeping the tradition ever since. Saturday night at 333 on Broad, he’ll bring his band, some great originals, and a whole bunch of your favorite classic country and rock covers.

Shawn Ash is a local country singer and songwriter who will bring his originals and some great covers to DJ’s Tavern this Saturday. He’ll be playing with another great artist CJ Solar.

Film festival's seventh edition about ready for Sept. 10-11 premiere

(Media release) The Rome International Film Festival is preparing for its seventh season Sept. 10-11. For the last six years, RIFF has screened hundreds of film offerings originating from Georgia to Katmandu. Each year, the festival brings the best of new, independent films from around the globe to Rome.

Called “one of the outstanding film festivals in the southeast” by  MovieMaker magazine, RIFF has been the early home for numbers of independent films that have been selected for wide distribution, with selected films picked up by Miramax, the Starz network, public television and HBO.

RIFF’s presence has had a significant economic, cultural and intellectual impact on Rome, Floyd County and northwest Georgia. The festival has generated visibility for the art-friendly community. In its time, 15,000 people have viewed 700 screenings of independent films; 1,100 community volunteers have worked the festival; and in 2009 alone, 29 countries were represented at the festival.

Filmgoers will be able to view their selections all day on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11, in historic downtown Rome venues including Centre Stage at Heritage Hall and the DeSoto Theatre. The seventh annual festival will close on Saturday, Sept. 11 with an awards ceremony and viewing of the closing night feature. Day passes and individual screening tickets will be available in advance of the festival and at each venue during the festival.

Parade theme: A Green Christmas: Recycle, Reuse & Renew

(Media release) The Rome Christmas Parade committee announces the theme for the 2010 Christmas in Rome Parade. This year’s theme will be “A ‘Green’ Christmas -- Recycle, Reuse and Renew.” Participants are encouraged to use recycled and reused materials in the construction of their floats.

Committee Chairman Jerry Rucker said “We feel this theme will bring out a great deal of creativity in the community but will also be a theme where people can express themselves by renewing the spirit of Christmas.”

The committee held a contest this year and area residents were able to submit their suggestions for a theme on the parade website. The winning entry was submitted by Leanne Chambers and she will receive a check in the amount of $25.

This year’s parade will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 30, with a rain date of Dec. 2. Applications are now available on the website. The entry fee is $25 and all applications are due by Nov. 10. After that date, a late fee of $50 will be charged.

Proceeds from this year’s parade will be used to enhance the beauty of Rome and Floyd County during the holiday season. The committee is introducing a “Light Up Rome” campaign to encourage residents and public areas to make our community glow during the Christmas season.

Said Rucker: “Many people enjoy visiting communities to see their array of Christmas lights during the season. We would like to see Rome become one of those cities known for its beautiful lights in our historic neighborhoods, public places and along our rivers. We hope donations from the community will help our efforts this year to start with purchasing lighting for the new footbridge and Town Green area.”

To make a donation to the Light Up Rome effort, go to the website after Sept. 1 and designate your donation for “Light Up Rome.”
