She'll join Romey in entertaining fans at home games when the season starts April 6. Roxie made her premiere Tuesday night in the Rome Christmas Parade. Not much is known about Roxie except she likes pink cheerleading outfits. Romey had been "missing" in recent weeks and returned to Rome on Tuesday with Roxie at his side.

(11/22) FORMER ROME BRAVE SALTALAMCACHIA ON TEAM USA: Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, a member of the 2004 Rome Braves, has named to the United States Baseball Team and will participate in Olympic qualifying tournaments. "It’s definitely a huge honor to represent the United States against the best competition in the world," he said. Saltalamacchia hit .272 with 10 home runs and 51 RBI.  Last season in Myrtle Beach, he hit .314 with 19 home runs and 81 RBI. > USA

>10/27 (158 DAYS TO OPENING NIGHT): An electronic message board will rise soon above the visitors bullpen at State Mutual Stadium. The addition will be in place by opening day, April 8, says General Manager Mike Dunn. The message center will be in addition to the $1 million scoreboard the Braves added during the inaugural season in 2003.

"This gives us the opportunity to keep fans updated with all types of messaging, including player information and statistics," Dunn says. "We have been working with the Floyd County commissioners and are committed to keeping the stadium up-to-date with the latest in technology as well as maintaining a clean facility for fans to enjoy."

Adds Dunn: "This is the first of a few new surprises we will add to the stadium."

One key addition, more than a season away, is the proposed Miracle Field for handicapped athletes that will rise on city-donated land between State Mutual and the likely site of the new Barron Stadium.

Also new, as of the press release announcing the message board: a new logo commemorating the South Atlantic League All-Star Game to be played at State Mutual on June 26, 2007.

TRACKING THE ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE: Those of us who love minor league baseball will want to keep an eye on the Arizona Fall League. Several former Rome Braves are hitting it big in this off-season workout> FALL

UNOFFICIAL TALLY SHOWS SALLY LEAGUE HAD RECORD YEAR: We haven't seen an official release as yet but the 2005 season attendance stats on the South Atlantic League Web site shows more than 3.5 million fans attended the 16-team league's games this past season.

If those numbers hold--and we expect them to--that's 6.5 percent above 2004's record level (almost 3.3 million fans).

The Braves finished the season with 232,187 fans, or seventh place overall in the league. West Virginia finished with about 1,000 more fans than Rome. Lakewood took the top spot with 444,607 fans; Columbus came in last with 62,547.

The Rome numbers were down from 245,724 total fans in 2004 (a drop of 5.8 percent)> LEAGUE

He was named to the 2004 All-Star team as well as the South Atlantic League post-season team. In 2005 James played in Myrtle Beach, Mississippi and Richmond and had his best season in Mississippi, going 9-1 with a 2.09 ERA in 16 appearances.

James is the sixth former Rome Braves player on the Atlanta roster. He joins Jeff Francoeur, Brian McCann, Blaine Boyer, Anthony Lerew, and Kyle Davies on the Atlanta squad which currently leads the National League Eastern Division by six games. Also in Atlanta these days: Rome's three-year manager, Rocket Wheeler.

(9/7) BRAVES THANK FANS FOR 2005 SEASON

>Staff-produced retrospective recaps just completed season> BRAVES

ATLANTA CALLS ANOTHER ROME BRAVE UP--ROCKET: Rocket Wheeler, the popular three-season manager of the Rome Braves, has been called up to The Bigs. Wheeler has been asked to assist the Atlanta coaching staff until the end of the 2005 season. "I'll do whatever they ask me to do. I'll throw batting practice, hit infield and be available to help where ever I can." He'll find five former Rome Braves in the clubhouse: Brian McCann, Blaine Boyer, Anthony Lerew, Kyle Davis, and Jeff Francoeur. All were members of the 2003 championship team.

(9/6) BRAVES: NO LOSING SEASONS IN ROME: Through three seasons, the Rome Braves have yet to post a losing record. They came close in 2004, finishing .500. The year before, the inaugural year in Rome, the Braves won it all: the South Atlantic League championship.

This year: 72-65 with most of the losses coming in the "second season." The team finished the first half 39-29; the second half, 33-36.

Now we wait to see what changes await the 2006 team. Opening day is April 6 at home vs. Kannapolis.

Key things to watch in the off months: Whether Manager Rocket Wheeler returns for a fourth season (he's a fan favorite, for sure) and renewals of season tickets. The county gets its money mostly from season ticket sales so any erosion here won't be welcome.

One of the best things to happen tonight was I brought my mother to her first Rome Braves baseball game.  My son, Walter, also came along with Linda's two daughters and their husbands.  To top it off, our grand daughter Lily made it.  Four generations.  What a wonderful and blessed night.  It just doesn't get much better than this. >K-Man: We wuz robbed! Where was Howard with Rome Braves' security tonight?  The reason I ask is that the Rome Braves got robbed by two bad calls.  Enough about the negative. The good news for the night was that Stephen Russell ('04 Brave) came back and had four Ks.  We hung 7 Ks tonight and two DPs.  Thanks again to everyone who helped the K Club tonight.  And thanks to CiCi's Pizza.  The K crew needed it by the eighth inning. Some fans in Section 106 got a foul ball from Ivan Terrazas and gave it to his daughter.  She was very excited getting a baseball that her father had hit. (7/18) BRAVES WIN THIRD STRAIGHT, 3-1> BOX

>K-MAN RETURNS TO GAME, COLUMN: He's back!  Linda and the K-Man are back in town and there is no place like Rome. Our vacation plans were to see Tom Jones in concert in Biloxi but all we saw was rain from Hurricane Dennis.  We did go to Graceland and I survived.  Made lots of coroner jokes about Elvis but I better not tell them on The Blog. (Why not? The Blog likes Elvis jokes!)

Rome Braves: The last three games for the Rome Braves have been almost as exciting as playoff games.  Two come-back wins in the ninth inning and tonight, the last out was a strike out.  The fans went wild and so did the K-Man.  James Parr heated up the fans tonight as the relief pitcher.  We had six Ks and one double play.

Have I told you about Aflac?  Besides yelling out "What Time It Is," we now yell out "Aflac Time".  OK, let me explain.  Aflac stands for insurance and we yell "Aflac Time" when the Rome Braves need extra runs.  Insurance runs!  You also will hear lots of quacking. REALLY.

Glad to be back and hope to see all of you at the game. Ernie "The K-Man" Studard

(7/17) A.J. SAVES THE DAY: Fans are calling the late Saturday/Sunday afternoon Rome Braves' games the best back-to-back games ever at State Mutual Stadium. Sunday's game was accented by a huge blast by Ardley Jansen in the bottom of the 10th, scoring three runs and winning the game, 8-5. The Greensboro Grasshoppers had the lead going into the ninth but the Braves' tied it up. The win puts the Braves at the .500 mark for the second season. BOX

(7/16) SPLIT DECISION: Braves lose rain-delayed game; rebound in night cap. BOX

>SATURDAY RECAP: Check the team site> www.romebraves.com

>ROSTER MOVES: Rright-handed pitcher Seth Bobbit has been sent to Myrtle Beach while Bryan Digby, also a righty, returns from the Pelicans. Digby, was 1-4 in 25 appearance at Myrtle Beach.

FAN CLUB UPDATE: (By Sylvia Mann): The Rome Braves Fan Club is planning a Meet & Greet for the team while they are in Asheville on Sunday, July 24. Becca Maddox ( kiteflyer51759@aol.com) is taking care of this for the Fan Club. If you plan to attend, please e-mail her by noon Monday so she'll have time to work with the Braves. The Fan Club will buy the meals for the players and staff. If you want to eat with them, let Becca know.

The Fan Club will have a booth at the Redneck Rummage Sale on July 30. We have enough volunteers (six) to setup from 5-7:30 a.m. but will need helpers to work anytime you can be available from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. We also need helpers to clean up and help get rid of what (if anything) we have left. We have to be out of the park by 4:30 p.m. Please e-mail me if you have any questions (ma7934@aol.com) Any help you can give will be appreciated. If you have anything you would like to donate to the Fan Club to sell, you can take it to World Hi-Fi from noon Monday, July 25, to noon Friday, July 29.

The Fan Club is selling raffle tickets. If you would like to help sell or if you would like to buy some; please see Doug Hamil or Sylvia Mann at the ball park (section 107, row 8).

(7/15) DELAY OF GAME: The Braves-Kannapolis game was suspended Friday night after a cloud burst in the second inning. The outfield already was saturated from the rains in the past 24 hours. They resume the Friday game at 6 p.m. Saturday and then will play a second, seven-inning game following a short break. The score was 2-0 Kannapolis at the break. NO BOX

>IN THE STANDS: Big turnout, near a sell out. Hundreds of fans lined up way before the gates opened at 6 p.m. for "Bat Night" (bats for kids 14 and under)... Adrian Carney again asked the question, "What Times is It?" as the K Man's AWOL status continued... That Jones guy from Atlanta played third and drew a walk...

(7/14) BRAVES WIN AGAIN WITH CHIPPER AS DH: In a rain-shortened game (eight innings), the Braves again beat the Intimidators. Chipper Jones, on rehab assignment, was the designated hitter and batted .500. Attendance: 3,252.  BOX

(7/13) CHIPPER'S A HIT AS BRAVES SLAM INTIMIDATORS: A lot of extra faces were at State Mutual Stadium Wednesday to get a look and cell phone camera shot at Chipper Jones as he continues his rehab assignment in Rome. The game wasn't a sellout--blame the weather and church night--but there were a number of first-timers there Wednesday night. Final score: Rome 8, Kannapolis 3. BOX

>HIGHLIGHTS: Jones led the Braves, batting .333 with one hit in three at-bats. He hit into a double play his first time at bat, scoring one run, and came back with two RBIs later in the game... Fan favorite Carlos Guzman smacked a homerun in the second inning... Attendance: 4,480 (capacity is 5,105)

>DESIGNATED K MAN: With Ernie "The K Man" Studard AWOL, the familiar "What Times Is It?" chant fell on Adrian Carney. The K Man would have been proud

>GAME NOTES: Lots of extra media packed the press box to watch Chipper's rehab start. With the majors off Wednesday as part of the All-Star break, the spotlight was on the Atlanta Braves' third baseman--and Rome... The radio broadcast of the game by Randy and Matt Davis also went national... It was interesting tracking two No. 10s on the field--Chipper Jones and Vann Pope...

>TONIGHT'S GAME: Chipper's back for one more. Tickets are on sale from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Prices: $10, $8, $6 and $4. For more: www.romebraves.com

ROME TO HOST ALL-STAR GAME: Rome/Floyd County, the Braves and State Mutual Stadium will host the 2007 South Atlantic League All-Star Game.

The contest between the northern and southern division stars is set for that June 26. But other events will stretch the celebration over three days, pumping several million dollars into the local economy.

The "All-Star Extravaganza" will include a golf tournament, community wide concert, a parade along Broad Street parade, skills competition and other activities.

"We are extremely proud of this honor," says Rome Braves General Manager Michael Dunn. "With our beautiful facility and wonderful community support, this promises to be the finest All-Star event to date.

"A lot of work has taken place by our committee and a lot more is yet to come to make this a successful three-day event. We are proud to bring this to Rome and Floyd County."

The news comes following a day of SAL meetings in Augusta, site of tonight's All-Star game. Three games are among the Southern Division players: Pitcher Luis Atilano, catcher Clint Sammons and infielder Mike Rozema.  (Click ROSTER for all members)

You can watch the game on CSS, Comcast's local cable sports network. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The 2007 event will come at what generally is a quieter time of year for Rome's tourism industry.

A possible bid to host the Sally League's All-Star game was frequently mentioned last fall as supporters pushed a referendum to amend Rome's drinking laws. Supporters said those of those arriving in town the Sunday before the event would want a drink (as would those attending any sort of convention-style event). Voters approved the strict Sunday-by-the-drink provisions last November.

It is the latest championship-level event to come to Greater Rome.

The Braves won the SAL Championship at State Mutual in their first season (2003).  The community also has been the site of three Tour de Georgia stops, including the 2004 event when cycling superstar Lance Armstrong won both Rome stages and the eventual tour crown.

This week, the second season of the World Basketball Association comes to an end with the championship slated for Shorter College. The Rome Gladiators are among the teams favored to win it all.

And on July 10, the Rome Renegades take on an opponent to be named next weekend in the opening round of the National Indoor Football League championship.

(6/26) FILETED BY THE CATFISH: This all-star break is coming at a good time for the Rome Braves. They'll have three days to figure out why the offense is stalled and pitching is looking rough. Sunday's final: 7-1 Catfish.  BOX
